Mission Statement: We the Congregation of the Great Spirit, a Catholic American Indian Parish in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, with the help of our sister, Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, commit ourselves to the fulfillment of our Baptism in Jesus Christ. Treasuring the priceless heritage of our American Indian Culture and Spirituality, we seek to be His Church-Native to this time, this place, and this culture. We preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We study, love and live the word of God as found in the sacred scriptures, so the traditions of our culture will be enhansed by the spirit of Christ, while our faith in the Gospel and our cultural values compliment and strengthen one and other. As a Sacramental community we gather to worship our creator, to be united to the death and life of Christ in the Eucharist, to heal, to love and serve. As a Catholic American Indian People who are called and gifted by the Spirit, we support, develop and encourage native leadership to strengthen the American Indian presence within the Catholic Church. Motivated by the Ecumenical Spirit of our Church and the interfaith nature of the urban Indian Community in which we live, we work in mutual support we work with Native People of all faiths and spiritual ways, working together in a spirit of co-cooperation and collaboration. Compelled by the Gospel to promote and defend human rights and the dignity of all people, we joined all our American Indian sisters and brothers in the on-going struggle to secure justice for our tribes and nations. We seek to walk in harmony with all people of the four directions on mother earth. |
